When learning new licks, always start off at a slow speed that you are comfortable with. If you are missing notes or falling off of the beat, then you are going too fast. Use a metronome and gradually increase the BPM once you become comfortable with the speed that you have been working at. Speed will come naturally if you concentrate on getting things right first; you must first learn to walk before you can run.
